HANS-PETER KELLNER
Born in Vienna. Austrian citizen.
Mag. phil. in Film-, Theatre- and Media Studies, University of Vienna.
Artistic Director of the Sommerspiele Grein Festival.
Works primarily as a stage director, but also as dramaturge, producer, author and literary translator.
Since 1986 he has worked extensively in theatre, film, television and circus and has since 1993 directed more than fifty plays at venues in Austria and Germany, as well as in London, where he was based between 1995 and 2000, working with Tom Stoppard, David Farr, and Michael Kingsbury. In 2000 Hans-Peter moved to Copenhagen where he directed, among other plays, the first ever site-specific production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at Kronborg Castle in Elsinore and cross-over arts projects 9 x 9 x 9 at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen, in collaboration with The Royal Theatre and Danish national broadcasting company DR.
In 2011 he directed his first opera production, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Bastien & Bastienne in Istanbul. The modern World première of Joseph Friebert's Das Serail will be staged in Salzburg in 2024 in his direction.
Since 2023 he is the Artistic Director of Sommerspiele Grein at the historic Stadttheater Grein.
Hans-Peter has translated around twenty plays into German, many written by contemporary Scandinavian playwrights, and he regularly adapts classic plays for the modern stage. In recent years he has resumed theatre studies, with lectures and publications mainly related to European theatre and opera of the eighteenth century.
